THE WORKS OF GOD BEAR WITNESS TO THE TRUTH

CATHOLIC DAILY GOSPEL REFLECTION FOR TODAY

THE WORKS OF GOD BEAR WITNESS TO THE TRUTH

GOSPEL
John 10:31-42 (Douay-Rheims Bible)

The Jews then took up stones to stone him.
Jesus answered them: Many good works I have shewed you from my Father; for which of those works do you stone me?
The Jews answered him: For a good work we stone thee not, but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God.
Jesus answered them: Is it not written in your law: I said you are gods?
If he called them gods, to whom the word of God was spoken, and the scripture cannot be broken;
Do you say of him, whom the Father hath sanctified and sent into the world: Thou blasphemest; because I said, I am the Son of God?
If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not.
But if I do, though you will not believe me, believe the works: that you may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in the Father.
They sought therefore to take him; and he escaped out of their hands.
And he went again beyond the Jordan, into that place where John was baptizing first; and there he abode.
And many resorted to him, and they said: John indeed did no sign.
But all things whatsoever John said of this man were true.
And many believed in him.

REFLECTION

In our daily lives, we often struggle to recognize God at work—especially when His presence challenges our expectations. Like the people in today’s Gospel, we may witness goodness, truth, and love, yet still hesitate to believe fully. This passage invites us to open our hearts and see God not only in words but in actions.

UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL

This passage takes place during a time of increasing tension between Jesus and the religious leaders. They accuse Him of blasphemy because He claims unity with the Father—something they cannot accept due to their limited understanding of His divine identity.

Jesus responds not with anger, but with reason and truth. He points to Scripture and reminds them that God’s word cannot be broken. More importantly, He directs them to His works—His miracles, His compassion, His authority—as evidence of His divine mission.

The “works” Jesus speaks of are not just miracles but signs of God’s presence: healing the sick, forgiving sins, and revealing truth. These works serve as living testimony that “the Father is in me, and I in the Father.”

The rejection Jesus faces highlights a powerful truth: sometimes hearts are closed not because of lack of evidence, but because of resistance to change or fear of truth.

WHAT THIS GOSPEL MEANS FOR US TODAY

Today, we are invited to examine our own faith. Do we truly believe in Christ, not just in words but in how we live?

In moments of doubt, we can look at the “works of God” in our lives—answered prayers, unexpected blessings, strength during trials. These are signs that God is active and present.

We may also face struggles similar to those in the Gospel: misunderstanding, rejection, or inner conflict. Yet Jesus reminds us to remain grounded in truth and trust in God’s plan.

In relationships, this Gospel calls us to witness through our actions. Just as Jesus’ works testified to His identity, our love, patience, and kindness can reflect Christ to others.

Faith is not only about belief—it is about recognizing God at work and responding with trust.

LIVING THE GOSPEL TODAY

  • Take a moment to reflect on one way God has worked in your life recently and thank Him for it.
  • Let your actions today—especially in difficult situations—reflect Christ’s love and patience.
  • Spend time in prayer asking for deeper faith, especially in areas where you struggle to believe.

CONCLUDING THOUGHT

Jesus does not leave us without proof of His presence. His works—then and now—reveal the truth of who He is. When we open our hearts, we begin to see that God is constantly at work in our lives, inviting us to believe more deeply and love more fully.

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord Jesus,
Help me to recognize Your presence in my life.
Open my eyes to see Your works and my heart to believe in You more deeply.
Give me the grace to trust You, especially in moments of doubt,
And to reflect Your love in all that I do.
Amen.
