JESUS THE TRUE SHEPHERD AND THE GATE TO LIFE

JESUS THE TRUE SHEPHERD AND THE GATE TO LIFE

GOSPEL:

Amen, amen I say to you, he that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up another way, the same is a thief and a robber.
But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.
To him the porter openeth, and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.
And when he hath sent forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice.
But a stranger they follow not, but fly from him, because they know not the voice of strangers.
This proverb Jesus spoke to them. But they understood not what he spoke to them.
Jesus therefore said to them again: Amen, amen I say to you, I am the door of the sheep.
All others, as many as have come, are thieves and robbers: and the sheep heard them not.
I am the door. By me, if any man enter in, he shall be saved: and he shall go in and go out, and shall find pastures.
The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I am come that they may have life, and may have it more abundantly.

REFLECTION:

In a world filled with many voices competing for our attention, it becomes difficult to know which path truly leads to peace and fulfillment. Today’s Gospel reminds us that not every voice speaks truth, and not every path leads to life. Jesus offers clarity: He is both the Shepherd who leads and the Gate through which we must enter.

UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL:

In the time of Jesus, shepherding was a familiar image. Sheepfolds were enclosed spaces with a single entrance guarded by a gatekeeper. Only the true shepherd had rightful access, and the sheep recognized his voice.

Jesus uses this imagery to reveal profound truths. He identifies Himself not only as the Shepherd but also as the Door—the only legitimate way to salvation. Those who come “another way” represent false leaders, deceivers, or influences that draw people away from God.

The “voice” is a powerful symbol. It represents truth, love, and divine guidance. The sheep’s ability to recognize the shepherd’s voice reflects the relationship between Christ and His followers—a relationship built on trust, familiarity, and love.

The contrast between the shepherd and the thief is stark: one gives life, the other destroys. Jesus is not merely offering survival, but abundant life—fullness of grace, joy, and eternal hope.

WHAT THIS GOSPEL MEANS FOR US TODAY:

Today, we are surrounded by countless “voices”—social media, culture, personal desires, and worldly pressures. Not all of them lead us closer to God. Some distract, confuse, or even harm our spiritual life.

Jesus invites us to develop a deeper relationship with Him so we can recognize His voice clearly. This requires prayer, reading Scripture, and living according to His teachings.

In our struggles, it is comforting to know that Christ calls us by name. He knows our fears, our wounds, and our desires. He does not abandon us but leads us gently.

In relationships, we are called to reflect the voice of the Shepherd—speaking truth with love, guiding others with patience, and avoiding the “thief-like” tendencies of manipulation or selfishness.

Spiritually, this Gospel challenges us: Whose voice are we listening to? Are we following Christ fully, or are we being led astray by other influences?

LIVING THE GOSPEL TODAY:

  • Spend a few minutes in silence today, listening for God’s voice in prayer.
  • Reflect on one area of your life where you may be following the wrong “voice” and surrender it to Jesus.
  • Practice being a “good shepherd” to someone—offer guidance, kindness, or encouragement.

CONCLUDING THOUGHT:

Jesus is not just one option among many—He is the way, the truth, and the life. When we listen to His voice and follow Him, we find not only direction but true fulfillment. In Him, we are safe, known, and deeply loved.

CLOSING PRAYER:

Lord Jesus, You are the Good Shepherd and the Gate to eternal life. Help me to recognize Your voice above all others. Lead me in Your truth, protect me from deception, and guide me to the fullness of life You promise. Amen.
