Day 12 of Lent: Obedience — Loving God Through His Will

Day 12 of Lent: Obedience — Loving God Through His Will

I. Scripture Reading — John 14:15, 21 (RSV-CE)

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

He who has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me;
and he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”

II. Meditation — The Road He Didn’t Want to Take

A young man once felt called to serve in a difficult ministry. He knew it would require sacrifice, long hours, and little recognition. Everything in him wanted to choose an easier path.

He prayed about it for weeks.

Still, the same quiet invitation remained in his heart.

Finally, he said, “Lord, I don’t understand. I’m afraid. But I trust You.”

Years later, he looked back and said, “That ‘yes’ changed my life.”

Obedience is often like that.

It is rarely dramatic.
It is usually quiet.
It is often uncomfortable.

Jesus tells us plainly:
“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”

He does not say:
“If you feel like it.”
“If it is easy.”
“If it makes sense.”

Love is proved in obedience.

Jesus Himself lived this perfectly. In Gethsemane He prayed:
“Not my will, but Yours be done.”

Lent invites us to learn that same surrender.

III. Reflection — Obedience as an Act of Love

Many people think obedience is about rules and restrictions.

But Jesus reveals something deeper:
Obedience is about relationship.

A child obeys a loving parent not out of fear,
but out of trust.

So it is with God.

Obedience says:
“I trust Your wisdom more than my feelings.”
“I believe Your plan is better than mine.”
“I choose Your will over my comfort.”

Disobedience often disguises itself as independence:
“I’ll decide for myself.”
“I know better.”
“I’ll do it later.”

But independence from God always leads to confusion.

True freedom is found in surrender.

When we obey God:

  • We grow in peace.

  • We deepen in holiness.

  • We become more Christ-like.

Jesus promises:
“He who loves Me… I will manifest Myself to him.”

Obedience opens the door to deeper intimacy with God.

IV. Prayer — A Prayer for a Will Aligned with God

Lord Jesus,

You obeyed the Father perfectly,
even when it led to suffering.
even when it led to sacrifice.
even when it led to the Cross.

Teach me Your obedience.

I confess that I resist Your will.
I choose comfort over holiness.
I choose convenience over truth.
I choose my plans over Yours.

Forgive me, Lord.

Give me a listening heart.
Help me recognize Your voice.
Strengthen me to follow it faithfully.

When obedience feels hard, sustain me.
When obedience costs something, remind me of eternity.
When obedience is hidden, reward me with Your peace.

Let me not obey out of fear,
but out of love.

Let me not follow reluctantly,
but joyfully.

Unite my will to Yours,
so that my life may glorify You.

Not my will, Lord,
but Yours be done.

Amen.

V. Action for Today

  1. Identify one area where God is calling you to greater obedience.

  2. Follow through today, even if it feels difficult.

  3. Read one Gospel passage and apply it practically.

  4. Pray: “Jesus, I trust You. I will follow.”

Tonight reflect:
Where did I choose God’s will over my own today?
