BORN OF THE SPIRIT AND LIFTED BY LOVE
CATHOLIC DAILY GOSPEL REFLECTION FOR TODAY
BORN OF THE SPIRIT AND LIFTED BY LOVE

GOSPEL: JOHN 3:7B-15 (DOUAY-RHEIMS BIBLE)
“Marvel not, that I said to thee, You must be born again.
The spirit breatheth where he will: and thou hearest his voice, but thou knowest not whence he cometh, and whither he goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Nicodemus answered, and said to him: How can these things be done?
Jesus answered, and said to him: Art thou a master in Israel, and knowest not these things?
Amen, amen I say to thee, that we speak what we know, and we testify what we have seen, and you receive not our testimony.
If I have spoken to you earthly things, and you believe not; how will you believe, if I shall speak to you heavenly things?
And no man hath ascended into heaven, but he that descended from heaven, the Son of man who is in heaven.
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up:
That whosoever believeth in him, may not perish; but may have life everlasting.”
REFLECTION
In our daily lives, we often seek clarity, control, and certainty. Yet Jesus reminds us that the life of faith is not always something we can fully grasp or predict. Like the wind, God’s Spirit moves in ways beyond our understanding. Today’s Gospel invites us to trust in that divine movement and allow ourselves to be transformed from within.
UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL
This passage comes from the nighttime conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, a Pharisee and teacher of the law. Nicodemus represents those who sincerely seek God but struggle to understand the deeper mysteries of faith.
Historically, the Jewish people were familiar with signs and laws, yet Jesus introduces something radically new: spiritual rebirth. To be “born again” is not a physical act but a transformation through the Holy Spirit.
Jesus uses powerful imagery:
- The wind (Spirit): Invisible yet real, uncontrollable yet life-giving. It symbolizes how God works in hidden but powerful ways.
- The bronze serpent (from Moses): In the Old Testament, those who looked upon the lifted serpent were healed. Jesus connects this to His own crucifixion—He will be “lifted up” on the cross for our salvation.
The message is clear: salvation comes through faith in Jesus, who descends from heaven and offers eternal life.
WHAT THIS GOSPEL MEANS FOR US TODAY?
This Gospel speaks directly into our modern struggles.
In our personal faith, we may want clear answers and visible signs. Yet Jesus calls us to trust even when we do not fully understand.
In our struggles, whether emotional, spiritual, or physical, we are reminded that God is at work—even when unseen. Like the wind, His grace is moving in our lives.
In our relationships, being “born of the Spirit” means loving others with patience, forgiveness, and humility—reflecting the transformation within us.
For our spiritual growth, this passage invites us to surrender control and allow God to reshape our hearts. Faith is not about knowing everything—it is about trusting the One who does.

CONCLUDING THOUGHT
Jesus invites us into a life that is deeper than logic and richer than certainty—a life led by the Spirit. Though we may not fully understand God’s ways, we are called to trust Him completely. When we fix our eyes on Christ, especially in His sacrifice, we discover the path to true life.
