CATHOLIC DAILY GOSPEL REFLECTION FOR TODAY, MARCH 12, 2026 – THURSDAY
A KINGDOM THAT CANNOT BE DIVIDED
LITURGICAL DAY / FEAST
THURSDAY OF THE THIRD WEEK OF LENT
GOSPEL
Luke 11:14–23 (Douay-Rheims Bible)
“And he was casting out a devil, and the same was dumb. And when he had cast out the devil, the dumb spoke; and the multitudes were in admiration.
But some of them said: He casteth out devils by Beelzebub, the prince of devils.
And others tempting, asked of him a sign from heaven.
But he seeing their thoughts, said to them: Every kingdom divided against itself shall be brought to desolation, and house upon house shall fall.
And if Satan also be divided against himself, how shall his kingdom stand? because you say that through Beelzebub I cast out devils.
Now if I cast out devils by Beelzebub, by whom do your children cast them out? Therefore they shall be your judges.
But if I by the finger of God cast out devils, doubtless the kingdom of God is come upon you.
When a strong man armed keepeth his court, those things are in peace which he possesseth.
But if a stronger than he come upon him and overcome him, he will take away all his armour wherein he trusted, and will distribute his spoils.
He that is not with me is against me: and he that gathereth not with me scattereth.”
REFLECTION
Sometimes God works clearly before our eyes, yet our hearts can still resist believing. In today’s Gospel, Jesus performs a miraculous act of mercy—freeing a man who could not speak because of demonic oppression. The crowd witnesses the miracle, but instead of rejoicing, some accuse Jesus of working through the power of evil.
This moment reveals something deeply human: when our hearts are closed, even the clearest signs of God can be misunderstood.
Jesus responds with wisdom and authority, reminding us that the Kingdom of God is not divided and that true power comes from God alone.
UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL
In first-century Jewish culture, demonic oppression was believed to affect both physical and spiritual life. When Jesus casts out the demon, He restores not only the man’s speech but also his dignity and freedom.
However, the religious opponents of Jesus accuse Him of using the power of Beelzebub, a name associated with the prince of demons. Their accusation reveals their refusal to accept Jesus’ divine authority.
Jesus answers them with powerful logic and imagery:
A divided kingdom cannot stand.
If Satan were casting out Satan, his kingdom would collapse.
Jesus then reveals something even deeper: the miracle is a sign that God’s Kingdom has already arrived.
He describes Satan as a “strong man” guarding his possessions. But when someone stronger comes, that strong man is defeated and his power is broken.
The “stronger one” is Christ Himself.
Through His authority, Jesus breaks the power of evil and liberates humanity.
Finally, Jesus makes a clear declaration:
“He that is not with me is against me.”
The Gospel invites us to choose where we stand.
ORIGINAL LANGUAGE INSIGHT
A powerful phrase in this passage is “the finger of God.”
In Greek, this is “δάκτυλος Θεοῦ (daktulos Theou)”.
This phrase appears earlier in Scripture in Exodus 8:19, when Pharaoh’s magicians recognized that the miracles of Moses were truly the work of God.
By using this phrase, Jesus connects His mission with God’s saving power throughout salvation history.
It means: God Himself is acting here.
The Kingdom of God is not merely coming someday—it is already breaking into the world through Christ.
INSIGHT FROM THE CHURCH
The Early Church Fathers, especially St. Augustine, reflected deeply on this passage.
St. Augustine taught that the “strong man” represents the devil who once held humanity captive through sin. But Christ, the stronger one, entered the world through the Incarnation to defeat him.
Through Christ’s death and resurrection, the enemy’s hold over humanity is broken.
The Church continues this mission today through:
-
the Sacraments
-
the proclamation of the Gospel
-
the power of prayer and grace
Every act of conversion is another sign that the stronger One is still at work.
WHAT THIS GOSPEL MEANS FOR US TODAY
This Gospel reminds us that spiritual life is not neutral territory.
Jesus tells us clearly: we cannot remain undecided.
Every day we are choosing—through our thoughts, actions, and priorities—whether we are gathering with Christ or scattering away from Him.
Modern life is full of distractions, doubts, and voices that try to weaken our faith. Sometimes we may even question God when we cannot understand His ways.
But Christ reminds us that His power is greater than any darkness we face.
-
Greater than our fears
-
Greater than our sins
-
Greater than the struggles of the world
Lent is a time when the Church invites us to renew our allegiance to Christ—to stand firmly with Him and allow Him to free our hearts.
When we choose Christ, we participate in the victory of the Kingdom of God.
LIVING THE GOSPEL TODAY
Here are three simple ways to live this Gospel today:
Choose Christ intentionally
Begin the day by offering it to God and consciously choosing to follow His will.
Guard unity in your relationships
Avoid gossip, resentment, or division. Seek peace and reconciliation.
Invite Christ to be stronger than your struggles
Bring your fears, temptations, and weaknesses to prayer and ask Jesus to overcome them.
FAITH QUOTE
“Where Christ reigns, darkness loses its power and the Kingdom of God begins in the heart.”
CONCLUDING THOUGHT
Jesus’ message today is clear: the Kingdom of God is already among us. Every act of faith, every prayer, and every choice for goodness is part of Christ’s victory over evil. The stronger One has come—and when we stand with Him, we share in His triumph.
CLOSING PRAYER
Lord Jesus Christ,
You are stronger than every power of darkness.
