BORN AGAIN THROUGH THE SPIRIT
CATHOLIC DAILY GOSPEL REFLECTION FOR TODAY
BORN AGAIN THROUGH THE SPIRIT

GOSPEL
JOHN 3:1-8 (DOUAY-RHEIMS BIBLE)
There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.
This man came to Jesus by night, and said to him: Rabbi, we know that thou art come a teacher from God; for no man can do these signs which thou dost, unless God be with him.
Jesus answered, and said to him: Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.
Nicodemus saith to him: How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb, and be born again?
Jesus answered: Amen, amen I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
That which is born of the flesh, is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit, is spirit.
Wonder not, that I said to thee, you must be born again.
The Spirit breatheth where he will; and thou hearest his voice, but thou knowest not whence he cometh, and whither he goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
REFLECTION
In our daily lives, we often focus on external changes—improving habits, achieving goals, or fixing problems. Yet, today’s Gospel reminds us that true transformation begins deep within. Jesus invites us not just to improve, but to be completely renewed—born again in the Spirit.
UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL
Nicodemus, a learned Pharisee and leader, comes to Jesus at night—symbolizing both curiosity and spiritual darkness. Despite his knowledge, he struggles to grasp Jesus’ teaching about being “born again.”
Jesus speaks of a deeper rebirth—not physical, but spiritual. This rebirth “of water and the Holy Ghost” points clearly to Baptism, the sacrament through which we are made new creations in Christ.
The contrast between “flesh” and “Spirit” highlights two ways of living:
- The flesh represents human limitations and worldly thinking
- The Spirit represents divine life, grace, and transformation
The image of the wind (Spirit) is powerful. Just as the wind is unseen yet real, the Holy Spirit works invisibly but powerfully within us, guiding, renewing, and transforming our hearts.
Jesus’ message is clear: entry into God’s kingdom requires a radical inner change—a new life rooted in God.
WHAT THIS GOSPEL MEANS FOR US TODAY
Today, many of us live like Nicodemus—curious about God, yet hesitant to fully surrender.
This Gospel challenges us to move beyond surface-level faith. Being “born again” is not a one-time event but a continuous journey of renewal.
In our personal faith, this means allowing God to transform our hearts, not just our actions.
In our struggles, it reminds us that change is possible through grace, not just effort.
In our relationships, it calls us to love with a renewed spirit—patient, forgiving, and self-giving.
In our spiritual growth, it urges us to rely on the Holy Spirit, even when we do not fully understand His ways.
Sometimes, like the wind, God’s work in our lives is mysterious. But we are called to trust, to surrender, and to allow Him to lead.
LIVING THE GOSPEL TODAY

CONCLUDING THOUGHT
Jesus calls us to more than routine faith—He calls us to transformation. To be “born of the Spirit” is to live a life continually renewed by God’s grace. When we open our hearts to the Holy Spirit, we begin to see, live, and love in a completely new way.
