THE LOVE THAT POURS ITSELF OUT

CATHOLIC DAILY GOSPEL REFLECTION FOR TODAY

THE LOVE THAT POURS ITSELF OUT

GOSPEL
John 12:1-11 (Douay-Rheims Bible)

Then Jesus, therefore, six days before the pasch, came to Bethania, where Lazarus had been dead, whom Jesus raised to life.
And they made him a supper there: and Martha served: but Lazarus was one of them that were at table with him.
Mary therefore took a pound of ointment of right spikenard, of great price, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment.
Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, he that was about to betray him, said:
Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?
Now he said this, not because he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and having the purse, carried the things that were put therein.
Jesus therefore said: Let her alone, that she may keep it against the day of my burial.
For the poor you have always with you; but me you have not always.
A great multitude therefore of the Jews knew that he was there; and they came, not for Jesus’ sake only, but that they might see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
But the chief priests thought to kill Lazarus also:
Because many of the Jews, by reason of him, went away, and believed in Jesus.

REFLECTION

In today’s Gospel, we are invited into a deeply personal moment of love and devotion. Mary’s act may seem extravagant, even excessive, yet it reveals something essential about the heart that truly loves God. In our busy and practical lives, we often measure everything—time, effort, resources—but love for Christ cannot be measured. It must be freely given.

UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL

This scene takes place in Bethany, shortly before the Passion of Jesus. It is a moment filled with tension and meaning. Jesus has just raised Lazarus from the dead, and this miracle has stirred both faith and hostility among the people.

Mary’s act of anointing Jesus with costly spikenard is rich in symbolism. In biblical times, such ointment was used for honoring kings or preparing bodies for burial. Here, it points directly to Jesus’ coming sacrifice. Without fully realizing it, Mary is preparing Him for His death.

Judas, on the other hand, represents a contrasting attitude. While Mary gives generously, Judas calculates and criticizes. His concern appears practical, but the Gospel reveals his true motive—self-interest. This contrast highlights two kinds of discipleship: one rooted in love and sacrifice, the other in selfishness and pretense.

The fragrance filling the house symbolizes how genuine love for Christ cannot be hidden. It spreads, touches others, and leaves a lasting impact.

WHAT THIS GOSPEL MEANS FOR US TODAY

This Gospel challenges us to examine how we love God in our daily lives. Do we give Him only what is convenient, or do we offer Him our best?

Like Mary, we are called to a personal and intimate relationship with Jesus. This may mean giving our time in prayer, showing kindness when it is difficult, or sacrificing our comfort for others. True love for Christ is often seen in quiet, humble acts that may go unnoticed by the world.

We also encounter moments like Judas—times when we judge others, question generosity, or cling to what we have instead of trusting God. This Gospel invites us to let go of that mindset and embrace a spirit of self-giving love.

In our relationships, this message reminds us to love without counting the cost—to forgive, to serve, and to be present for others wholeheartedly.

Spiritually, we are encouraged to “pour out” our lives for God, trusting that nothing given in love is ever wasted.

LIVING THE GOSPEL TODAY

• Offer something meaningful to God today—your time, a sacrifice, or an act of love done in secret.
• Practice generosity without expecting recognition or reward.
• Show sincere love to someone in need, even in a small but intentional way.

CONCLUDING THOUGHT

Mary teaches us that love for Jesus is never wasted. What may seem excessive in the eyes of the world is beautiful in the eyes of God. When we pour out our hearts in love, we fill the world with the fragrance of Christ.

Teach me to love You with a generous and humble heart.
