Who is St. Justin, Martyr and Philosopher?
St. Justin, born in Nablus, Palestine, was the son of Priscus and a Greek by race. During his youth, he dedicated himself to the study of letters, but as he grew older, his passion for philosophy and the pursuit of truth took precedence. Dissatisfied with the deceptive wisdom of contemporary philosophers, Justin eventually encountered a venerable old man who introduced him to the light of the true Christian faith.
Embracing Christianity wholeheartedly, Justin immersed himself in the study of Holy Scripture, which ignited a divine fire within his soul. His newfound faith and knowledge of Jesus Christ led him to compose numerous works aimed at explaining and spreading Christian teachings. Among his most notable contributions are his two Apologies, written in defense of the Christian faith.
Justin presented these Apologies to the Roman Senate, appealing to Emperor Antoninus Pius and his sons, including Marcus Antoninus Verus and Lucius Aurelius Commodus, who were persecuting Christians. His eloquent defenses and vigorous debates earned him a public edict that temporarily halted the persecution of Christians. However, Justin’s outspoken criticism of the immoral behavior of Crescens the Cynic led to his arrest and subsequent trial before Rusticus, the Prefect of Rome.
During his trial, Justin boldly professed his belief in one God, the creator of all things, and in Jesus Christ, the Son of God and foretold Messiah. Despite facing severe punishment, Justin remained steadfast in his faith, ultimately choosing martyrdom over renouncing his beliefs. He was scourged and executed, becoming a martyr for Christ. His followers secretly retrieved and buried his body with great reverence.
St. Justin is venerated as the patron saint of apologists, lecturers, orators, philosophers, and speakers. His symbols include the ox, pen, sword, and red-hot helmet.
