St. Jerome Emiliani was born in 1486 in Venice, Italy. As a young man, he pursued a military career but was captured and imprisoned during a battle. During his captivity, he turned to God in prayer, dedicating his life to service upon his miraculous escape. He became a priest and devoted himself to caring for orphans, the sick, and the poor. Seeing the desperate conditions of abandoned children, he founded the Somascan Fathers, an order dedicated to their care and education. St. Jerome’s compassionate work laid the foundation for modern orphanages and social welfare programs. He died in 1537 while tending to plague victims, giving his life in service to others.
Practical Lessons:
- Turn Hardship into Purpose: Jerome’s imprisonment led to his conversion and life of service. When facing personal struggles, reflect on how God may be calling you to something greater—whether through volunteering, mentoring, or supporting someone in need.
- Support Vulnerable Children: He saw the needs of orphans and took action. Today, you can support foster care programs, sponsor a child in need, or simply offer guidance and encouragement to struggling young people in your community.
- Serve Through Action, Not Just Words: Jerome cared for the sick during a plague, risking his own life. Instead of just offering thoughts and prayers, find ways to actively help those in crisis—whether by donating, cooking for a sick neighbor, or assisting those experiencing hardship.
Prayer:
St. Jerome Emiliani, compassionate father to the orphaned and poor, intercede for us that we may have hearts open to the suffering of others. Help us to see Christ in the forgotten and abandoned, and inspire us to act with love, generosity, and courage. May we, like you, serve not only with words but with deeds, offering our hands and hearts for the good of others. Amen.
Quote:
“Let the little ones come to me, for they find in me great mercy.” — St. Jerome Emiliani
