The Inspirational Story of Saint Charles Lwanga and His Companions
Charles Lwanga, one of the 22 martyrs of Uganda, stands as a beacon of faith and bravery. As the patron of youth and Catholic action across much of tropical Africa, his legacy is profound. Lwanga protected his fellow pages, aged between 13 and 30, from the predatory advances of the Bagandan ruler, Mwanga. During their imprisonment for defying the ruler’s demands, Lwanga not only shielded them but also encouraged and instructed them in the Catholic faith.
Charles discovered the teachings of Christ through two court retainers under Chief Mawulugungu. While still a catechumen, he joined the royal household as an assistant to Joseph Mukaso, the head of the court pages. On the night Mukaso was martyred for urging the African youths to resist Mwanga, Charles was baptized. Despite imprisonment, his unwavering courage and faith inspired his companions to remain steadfast and chaste.
For his refusal to succumb to immoral acts and his dedication to preserving his friends’ faith, Charles was martyred by being burned alive at Namugongo on June 3, 1886, by Mwanga’s order. Pope Paul VI canonized these 22 martyrs on October 18, 1964, acknowledging their sacrifice alongside Anglican pages martyred for the same cause.
