PEACE IN THE MIDST OF DOUBT AND FEAR
CATHOLIC DAILY GOSPEL REFLECTION FOR TODAY

PEACE IN THE MIDST OF DOUBT AND FEAR
GOSPEL
Luke 24:35-48 (Douay-Rheims Bible)
But they told what things were done in the way; and how they knew him in the breaking of bread.
Now whilst they were speaking these things, Jesus stood in the midst of them, and saith to them: Peace be to you; it is I, fear not.
But they being troubled and frightened, supposed that they saw a spirit.
And he said to them: Why are you troubled, and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
See my hands and feet, that it is I myself; handle, and see: for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as you see me to have.
And when he had said this, he shewed them his hands and feet.
But while they yet believed not, and wondered for joy, he said: Have you any thing to eat?
And they offered him a piece of a broiled fish, and a honeycomb.
And when he had eaten before them, taking the remains, he gave to them.
And he said to them: These are the words which I spoke to you, while I was yet with you, that all things must needs be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.
Then he opened their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.
And he said to them: Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead, the third day:
And that penance and remission of sins should be preached in his name, unto all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
And you are witnesses of these things.
REFLECTION
In our daily lives, we often face moments of fear, doubt, and uncertainty. Just like the disciples, we may struggle to believe that God is truly present in our circumstances. Yet today’s Gospel reminds us that even in confusion and fear, Jesus comes to stand among us and offer His peace.
UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL
This passage takes place after the Resurrection. The disciples are still trying to comprehend the shocking events of Jesus’ death and the reports of His rising. They are gathered together, likely afraid and uncertain, when Jesus suddenly appears among them.
His greeting, “Peace be to you,” is deeply significant. It is not just a simple greeting—it is a divine reassurance. Jesus knows their fear and doubt, and He responds not with rebuke, but with peace.
When He shows His hands and feet, He proves that He is not a ghost but truly risen in His glorified body. The act of eating in front of them further emphasizes the reality of the Resurrection. This is not symbolic—this is real, bodily resurrection.
Another key moment is when Jesus “opened their understanding.” This highlights that faith is both a gift and a journey. The disciples needed divine help to fully grasp Scripture and God’s plan of salvation.
Finally, Jesus commissions them: they are to preach repentance and forgiveness of sins to all nations. From fear-filled followers, they are transformed into courageous witnesses.
WHAT THIS GOSPEL MEANS FOR US TODAY
This Gospel speaks directly into our modern struggles.
When we feel overwhelmed, anxious, or doubtful, Jesus still comes to us and says, “Peace be to you.” His peace is not dependent on our circumstances but rooted in His presence.
Like the disciples, we may struggle to believe fully. We may question God during hardships, suffer from spiritual dryness, or feel distant from Him. Yet Jesus does not abandon us. Instead, He invites us to “touch” His presence through prayer, the Eucharist, and Scripture.
In our relationships, this Gospel calls us to be witnesses of forgiveness. Just as the apostles were sent to preach repentance and mercy, we too are called to bring healing, reconciliation, and love into our families and communities.
Spiritually, this passage reminds us that understanding grows over time. God patiently opens our minds and hearts, helping us to see His truth more clearly each day.
LIVING THE GOSPEL TODAY
- Take a few moments today to invite Jesus into your fears and ask Him for His peace.
- Spend time reading Scripture and ask the Holy Spirit to deepen your understanding.
- Practice forgiveness by reaching out to someone or letting go of resentment in your heart.
CONCLUDING THOUGHT
The risen Christ meets us exactly where we are—in our doubts, fears, and uncertainties. He does not wait for perfect faith; instead, He strengthens us with His presence and peace. As we grow in faith, we too are called to become witnesses of His love and mercy in the world.
