Trusting God’s Heart When Healing Is Delayed and Strength Feels Thin

Day 19 — Known by God

Theme: Your Identity Is Not Your Diagnosis

Scripture (Douay-Rheims Bible)

Isaias 43:1–3

“And now thus saith the Lord that created thee, O Jacob, and formed thee, O Israel: Fear not, for I have redeemed thee, and called thee by thy name: thou art mine.
When thou shalt pass through the waters, I will be with thee, and the rivers shall not cover thee: when thou shalt walk in the fire, thou shalt not be burnt, and the flames shall not burn in thee.
For I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Saviour.”

Meditation

Before her illness, Rebecca introduced herself by her profession.

“I’m a teacher.”
“I’m a runner.”
“I’m a volunteer.”

After chronic illness changed her daily capacity, those identifiers slowly faded. She could no longer work full-time. Running became impossible. Volunteer hours dwindled.

At a medical appointment, a new specialist referred to her not by name, but by diagnosis.

Rebecca drove home with tears in her eyes. She felt reduced to a condition. Defined by symptoms.

That evening, she opened Scripture and read: “I have called thee by thy name: thou art mine.”

For the first time in months, she felt seen—not as a diagnosis, not as a limitation, but as a beloved child.

Illness had changed her abilities.

But it had not changed her identity.

Reflection

Chronic illness has a subtle way of reshaping identity.

Conversations revolve around symptoms. Appointments focus on deficits. Forms ask you to list limitations. Social interactions adjust to what you can no longer do.

Over time, it can feel as though illness has become your primary label.

But Scripture speaks a deeper truth.

“Fear not, for I have redeemed thee… thou art mine.”

Before you were diagnosed, you were created. Before symptoms emerged, you were formed. Before limitations altered your routines, you were redeemed.

God calls you by name.

Your identity is not:

  • Your medical chart.

  • Your pain scale.

  • Your productivity level.

  • Your physical capacity.

You belong to God.

Notice the promise in Isaias: you will pass through waters and fire—but they will not overwhelm or destroy you. The passage does not deny hardship. It promises presence within it.

Illness may be something you walk through. It is not who you are.

Being known by God means:

  • You are fully seen.

  • You are deeply valued.

  • You are permanently claimed.

When the world reduces you to symptoms, God calls you by name.

When you feel invisible in crowded waiting rooms, He sees you clearly.

When you feel forgotten, He declares ownership: “Thou art mine.”

Let this truth reshape how you see yourself.

You are not defined by fragility.

You are defined by belonging.

Prayer

Creator and Redeemer,

You formed me before I understood myself. You knew my name before anyone spoke it. You saw my life before illness entered my story.

Yet I confess that sometimes I feel defined by what is wrong with my body. I feel labeled by diagnosis. I feel reduced to limitations.

Remind me who I am.

When fear rises, let me hear Your voice: “Fear not.”
When I feel overwhelmed, remind me that waters will not drown me and flames will not consume me.
When I feel invisible, call me by name.

Help me detach my identity from productivity. Guard me from believing that my worth has decreased because my strength has changed.

I belong to You.

Let that truth anchor me when symptoms fluctuate. Let it steady me when discouragement whispers otherwise.

I am Yours—not because of what I can do, but because of who You are.

And that is enough.

Amen.
