CHRIST THE FULFILLMENT OF THE LAW
GOSPEL
Matthew 5:17–19 (Douay-Rheims Bible)
“Do not think that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets. I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.
For amen I say unto you, till heaven and earth pass, one jot, or one tittle shall not pass of the law, till all be fulfilled.
He therefore that shall break one of these least commandments, and shall so teach men, shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven. But he that shall do and teach, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
REFLECTION
Many people today think of faith as something optional—something we can adapt to our preferences. But in today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that God’s law is not something to discard. Instead, Christ came to fulfill it and reveal its deepest meaning.
Jesus invites us to see God’s commandments not as burdens, but as a path to life. The law becomes alive when it is lived with love, sincerity, and faithfulness.
During the Lenten season, we are especially called to return to the heart of God’s law: loving God and loving others with our whole lives.
UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL
This passage comes from the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus teaches His disciples the deeper meaning of God’s commandments.
In Jewish tradition, the Law (Torah) and the Prophets represented the entire revelation God had given to Israel. Some people feared that Jesus’ teachings might replace or abolish the old commandments. Jesus corrects this misunderstanding.
He declares that He has come not to abolish the law but to bring it to completion. In Christ, the law reaches its true purpose. The commandments are no longer just external rules; they become a call to interior holiness.
The imagery of “one jot or one tittle” refers to the smallest markings in Hebrew writing—tiny strokes of a letter. Jesus emphasizes that even the smallest part of God’s word has value and meaning.
He also warns that those who dismiss even the smallest commandments risk leading others away from God. True greatness in the Kingdom belongs to those who both live and teach God’s truth faithfully.
ORIGINAL LANGUAGE INSIGHT
The Greek word translated as “fulfil” is plērōsai (πληρῶσαι).
This word means to complete, bring to fullness, or accomplish perfectly. Jesus is not merely continuing the law—He is revealing its ultimate meaning. Through His life, sacrifice, and resurrection, Christ shows that the law’s true goal is love, mercy, and salvation.
INSIGHT FROM THE CHURCH
St. Augustine beautifully explained this passage:
“The law was given that grace might be sought; grace was given that the law might be fulfilled.”
In other words, the commandments alone cannot save us. But through the grace of Christ, we receive the strength to live them faithfully. The law finds its perfection in charity—the love of God poured into our hearts.
WHAT THIS GOSPEL MEANS FOR US TODAY
In modern life, it is tempting to treat moral teachings as outdated or flexible. Society often encourages us to define our own truth. But Jesus reminds us that God’s truth does not change.
However, the Gospel is not about strict legalism. Jesus calls us to something deeper—a transformed heart.
Living the commandments today means:
-
Being honest even when dishonesty is easier
-
Forgiving when resentment feels justified
-
Choosing kindness in a culture of criticism
-
Staying faithful in prayer when life feels busy
Jesus is not asking for perfection overnight. He is inviting us into a life where God’s grace helps us grow daily in holiness.
Each small act of faithfulness—each “little commandment”—builds a life rooted in God.
LIVING THE GOSPEL TODAY
1. Examine your heart.
Ask yourself honestly if there are areas where you are ignoring God’s teachings.
2. Practice faithfulness in small things.
Even simple acts of patience, honesty, or charity fulfill God’s law in everyday life.
3. Be a witness through example.
Live your faith quietly but sincerely so others may see Christ through your actions.
FAITH QUOTE
“Christ did not erase God’s law—He wrote it upon our hearts.”
CONCLUDING THOUGHT
Jesus came not to remove God’s commandments but to reveal their true beauty. When we follow Christ, the law is no longer a burden but a guide that leads us toward freedom, holiness, and eternal life. Every faithful step we take brings us closer to the heart of God.
