Trusting God’s Heart When Healing Is Delayed and Strength Feels Thin

Day 17 — Strength for Today Only

Theme: Receiving Grace for the Present Moment

Scripture (Douay-Rheims Bible)

Deuteronomy 33:25; Matthew 6:31–34

“Let thy shoes be iron and brass. As thy days, so also shall thy strength be.” — Deuteronomy 33:25

“Be not solicitous therefore, saying, What shall we eat: or what shall we drink: or wherewith shall we be clothed?
For after all these things do the heathens seek. For your Father knoweth that you have need of all these things.
Seek ye therefore first the kingdom of God, and his justice: and all these things shall be added unto you.
Be not therefore solicitous for to morrow; for the morrow will be solicitous for itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof.” — Matthew 6:31–34

Meditation

Hannah often found herself exhausted not only by pain—but by anticipation.

She worried about next month’s test results. She feared next year’s progression. She wondered how she would handle future limitations. The unknown felt heavier than the present.

One afternoon, after a particularly anxious morning, she read: “As thy days, so also shall thy strength be.”

The words felt like a quiet interruption.

She realized she had been trying to gather strength for battles that had not yet arrived.

That day, she made a simple commitment: she would ask God for strength only for the hours in front of her.

Not for the next flare.
Not for next year’s unknowns.
Just for today.

And something unexpected happened.

Today felt manageable.

Reflection

Chronic illness stretches the imagination toward worst-case scenarios. It tempts you to forecast decline, anticipate complications, and mentally rehearse future fears.

But Scripture offers a merciful boundary: Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof.

God does not distribute grace in bulk for an imagined future. He provides strength proportionate to the present day.

“As thy days, so also shall thy strength be.”

This promise is deeply personal. It does not say your strength will always feel abundant. It says it will be appropriate.

There is a difference.

Appropriate strength means:

  • Enough to endure today’s appointment.

  • Enough to manage today’s symptoms.

  • Enough to make today’s decisions.

  • Enough to remain faithful today.

Borrowing tomorrow’s fear depletes today’s energy.

Jesus instructs us not to be “solicitous”—overly anxious—about tomorrow. Not because tomorrow is unimportant, but because God already inhabits it.

Your Father knows what you need.

Chronic illness can create layers of uncertainty. But you are not asked to conquer the entire future at once.

You are invited to:

  • Seek God first today.

  • Trust His provision today.

  • Receive His strength today.

When tomorrow arrives, grace will arrive with it.

Until then, today is enough.

Prayer

Faithful Provider,

You know how easily my thoughts race ahead. You see how quickly I imagine future difficulties and feel overwhelmed before they even come.

Forgive me for carrying tomorrow’s burdens today.

Teach me to live within the grace of this moment.

As my days are, let my strength be. Give me exactly what I need for today—not more, not less.

When anxiety tries to project frightening scenarios, quiet my mind. When uncertainty tempts me to control the future, remind me that You already hold it.

Help me seek Your kingdom first in this hour. Let obedience today be enough. Let trust today be enough.

I surrender tomorrow into Your capable hands. I release the need to predict or prepare for every possibility.

Give me steady strength for this appointment, this conversation, this flare, this moment.

And when tomorrow comes, I trust You will meet me there with fresh mercy.

For now, I receive today’s grace.

Amen.
