THE PROMISE OF LOVE AND THE HOLY SPIRIT

THE PROMISE OF LOVE AND THE HOLY SPIRIT

GOSPEL

John 14:21-26 (Douay-Rheims Bible)

He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them; he it is that loveth me. And he that loveth me, shall be loved of my Father: and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Judas saith to him, not the Iscariot: Lord, how is it, that thou wilt manifest thyself to us, and not to the world?
Jesus answered, and said to him: If any one love me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and will make our abode with him.
He that loveth me not, keepeth not my words. And the word which you have heard is not mine; but the Father’s who sent me.
These things have I spoken to you, abiding with you.
But the Paraclete, the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and bring all things to your mind, whatsoever I shall have said to you.

REFLECTION

In our daily lives, love is often measured by feelings or words. Yet in today’s Gospel, Jesus presents a deeper truth: love is proven through obedience. True love for Christ is not merely emotional—it is lived out in action, in faithfulness to His teachings.

This message invites us to examine our hearts. Do we truly love Jesus in the way we live, speak, and relate to others?

UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL

This passage takes place during the Last Supper, a deeply intimate moment before Jesus’ Passion. He prepares His disciples for His departure, assuring them that His presence will not leave them.

Jesus reveals a profound truth: love for Him is inseparable from keeping His commandments. This is not about rigid rule-following, but about a loving relationship rooted in trust and fidelity.

The promise of the “Paraclete,” or the Holy Spirit, is central here. The Holy Spirit is not just a guide, but a living presence of God within us—teaching, reminding, and strengthening us.

The imagery of God “making His abode” with those who love Him is powerful. It means that when we live in love and obedience, we become dwelling places of God Himself.

WHAT THIS GOSPEL MEANS FOR US TODAY

In today’s world, where distractions and challenges are constant, living out Christ’s commandments can feel difficult. Yet this Gospel reassures us that we are not alone.
