CALLED FROM UNBELIEF TO MISSION

CATHOLIC DAILY GOSPEL REFLECTION FOR TODAY

CALLED FROM UNBELIEF TO MISSION

CALLED FROM UNBELIEF TO MISSION

GOSPEL

Mark 16:9-15 (Douay-Rheims Bible)

Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalen, out of whom he had cast seven devils.
She went and told them that had been with him, who were mourning and weeping.
And they hearing that he was alive, and had been seen by her, did not believe.

And after that he appeared in another shape to two of them walking, as they were going into the country.
And they going told it to the rest: neither did they believe them.

At length he appeared to the eleven as they were at table: and he upbraided them with their incredulity and hardness of heart, because they did not believe them who had seen him after he was risen again.
And he said to them: Go ye into the whole world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

REFLECTION

The Gospel today speaks directly to the human heart—especially in moments of doubt, fear, and hesitation. Like the disciples, we sometimes struggle to believe even when God is already at work in our lives. Yet, Jesus does not abandon us in our weakness; instead, He meets us there and calls us forward.

UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL

This passage takes place immediately after the Resurrection. The disciples are grieving, confused, and fearful. Despite multiple witnesses—Mary Magdalene and the two disciples—they refuse to believe. Their disbelief reflects the deep sorrow and shattered expectations they experienced after the Crucifixion.

When Jesus finally appears, He rebukes them—not to condemn, but to awaken their faith. Their “hardness of heart” shows how human weakness can resist even the truth standing before them.

Yet what is striking is what follows: Jesus entrusts His mission to these very same imperfect men. “Go into the whole world and preach the gospel.” This reveals a powerful truth: God does not wait for perfect faith before calling us—He calls us in the midst of our weakness.

Symbolically, Mary Magdalene represents the transformative power of grace, while the disciples’ disbelief reflects our own struggles. The mission given to them signifies the universal call of the Church—to proclaim Christ to all.

WHAT THIS GOSPEL MEANS FOR US TODAY

This Gospel is deeply relevant to our daily lives.

In our personal faith, we may experience doubt or dryness in prayer. Like the disciples, we may struggle to believe in God’s presence during difficult times. Yet Jesus still comes to us—especially through the Eucharist, Scripture, and quiet moments of grace.

In our struggles, we often wait until we feel “ready” or “worthy” before serving God. But this Gospel reminds us that God works through imperfect people. Your weaknesses do not disqualify you—they can become the very place where God’s grace shines.

In our relationships, we are called to be witnesses. Just as Mary Magdalene shared the Good News, we are invited to bring hope, encouragement, and truth to others—even when we fear rejection.

For our spiritual growth, this passage challenges us to move from doubt to trust, from fear to mission. Faith is not just believing—it is responding to God’s call with courage.

LIVING THE GOSPEL TODAY

  • Choose faith over doubt: When uncertainty arises, turn to prayer and trust God even without full understanding.
  • Share your testimony: Speak about how God has worked in your life, even in small ways.
  • Act on your mission: Do one intentional act today that reflects Christ—kindness, forgiveness, or encouragement.

CONCLUDING THOUGHT

Jesus meets us where we are—even in disbelief—and calls us into something greater. The same Lord who corrected the disciples also commissioned them. Today, He does the same for us. Our journey is not about perfect faith, but about trusting Him enough to take the next step.
