FROM TEARS TO TESTIMONY: ENCOUNTERING THE RISEN LORD

GOSPEL

JOHN 20:11-18 (DOUAY-RHEIMS BIBLE)

But Mary stood at the sepulchre without, weeping. Now as she was weeping, she stooped down, and looked into the sepulchre,

And she saw two angels in white, sitting, one at the head, and one at the feet, where the body of Jesus had been laid.

They say to her: Woman, why weepest thou? She saith to them: Because they have taken away my Lord; and I know not where they have laid him.

When she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing; and she knew not that it was Jesus.

Jesus saith to her: Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, thinking that it was the gardener, saith to him: Sir, if thou hast taken him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away.

Jesus saith to her: Mary. She turning, saith to him: Rabboni (which is to say, Master).

Jesus saith to her: Do not touch me, for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say to them: I ascend to my Father and to your Father, to my God and your God.

Mary Magdalen cometh and telleth the disciples: I have seen the Lord, and these things he said to me.

REFLECTION

Mary Magdalene’s tears at the tomb echo the silent sorrows many of us carry. She came looking for a dead body, but instead encountered the Living God. How often do we search for God in places of loss, confusion, or despair—only to discover that He is already present, calling us by name?

This Gospel reminds us that even in our darkest moments, Christ is closer than we think.

UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL

Mary Magdalene’s presence at the tomb reflects deep love and fidelity. In the historical context, she was one of Jesus’ most devoted followers, present at His crucifixion and now at His burial site. Her grief is real and human—she believes all hope is lost.

The appearance of the angels signifies that heaven itself bears witness to the Resurrection. Yet, even this does not immediately console her. It is only when Jesus calls her by name—“Mary”—that recognition dawns.

This moment is rich in meaning. The Good Shepherd knows His sheep, and they know His voice. The transformation happens not through sight, but through a personal encounter.

Jesus’ words, “Do not touch me,” point to a new kind of relationship. He is no longer present in the same earthly way, but calls His followers into a deeper spiritual communion.

Mary becomes the first witness of the Resurrection—an apostle to the apostles—sent to proclaim the Good News.

WHAT THIS GOSPEL MEANS FOR US TODAY?

This Gospel speaks directly into our lives today.

In our personal faith, we may sometimes feel like Mary—confused, grieving, or unable to recognize God’s presence. Yet Jesus calls each of us by name. He meets us personally, not abstractly.

In our struggles, whether loss, failure, or uncertainty, we may think God is absent. But the Resurrection tells us that God is working even when we cannot see Him.

In our relationships, we are reminded to be bearers of hope. Like Mary, we are called to share the Good News with others, especially those who are hurting.

In our spiritual growth, this passage invites us to move from clinging to the past toward embracing a living relationship with Christ. Faith is not about holding on to what was, but trusting in what God is doing now.

LIVING THE GOSPEL TODAY

LISTEN FOR GOD’S VOICE

Take a few moments in silence today. Let God call you by name. Be attentive to His presence in prayer.

BRING YOUR SORROWS TO JESUS

Do not hide your grief or struggles. Like Mary, bring your tears to the Lord and allow Him to transform them into hope.

SHARE THE GOOD NEWS

Tell someone today about God’s goodness. Your testimony, like Mary’s, can bring light into someone else’s darkness.

CONCLUDING THOUGHT

The Resurrection is not just an event of the past—it is a living reality. Jesus meets us in our sorrow, calls us by name, and sends us out with purpose. Like Mary Magdalene, we are invited to move from weeping to witnessing, from searching to believing.

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord Jesus,
You called Mary by name and transformed her sorrow into joy.
Call me today, Lord, in the depths of my heart.
Help me to recognize Your presence in my life,
especially in moments of confusion and pain.
Give me the grace to trust in Your Resurrection
and to share Your love with others.
Amen.
