FEAR TURNED INTO JOY: ENCOUNTERING THE RISEN CHRIST

GOSPEL

MATTHEW 28:8-15 (DOUAY-RHEIMS BIBLE)

And they went out quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy, running to tell his disciples.
And behold Jesus met them, saying: All hail. But they came up and took hold of his feet, and adored him.
Then Jesus said to them: Fear not. Go, tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, there they shall see me.

Who when they were departed, behold some of the guard came into the city, and told the chief priests all things that had been done.
And they being assembled together with the ancients, taking counsel, gave a great sum of money to the soldiers,
Saying: Say you, His disciples came by night, and stole him away when we were asleep.
And if the governor shall hear of this, we will persuade him, and secure you.
So they taking the money, did as they were taught: and this word was spread abroad among the Jews even unto this day.

REFLECTION

The Resurrection of Jesus brings a powerful mixture of emotions—fear, awe, and overwhelming joy. The women who went to the tomb expected death, but instead encountered life itself. Their sorrow was transformed into mission.

In our own lives, we often approach situations with fear or uncertainty. Yet, just like these faithful women, we are invited to encounter Christ in unexpected moments—and to allow that encounter to transform us.

UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL

This passage takes place immediately after the Resurrection. The women, who had come to honor Jesus’ body, become the first witnesses of the risen Lord. In Jewish culture at the time, women were not considered reliable witnesses, yet God chooses them to proclaim the greatest truth in history. This highlights God’s way of overturning human expectations.

Jesus’ greeting, “All hail,” is both simple and profound—it is a moment of divine reassurance. When He says, “Fear not,” He echoes a constant message throughout Scripture: God’s presence removes fear.

Meanwhile, the chief priests attempt to suppress the truth by bribing the guards. This contrast is striking:

  • The women respond with faith and obedience
  • The authorities respond with fear and deception

The empty tomb becomes a dividing line between belief and denial.

WHAT THIS GOSPEL MEANS FOR US TODAY

Today, we are often faced with our own “empty tomb” moments—situations where we don’t fully understand what God is doing. We may feel confusion, doubt, or even fear.

Yet this Gospel reminds us:

  • In our personal faith, Christ meets us where we are. Even in uncertainty, He says, “Fear not.”
  • In our struggles, we may be tempted to ignore truth or take easier paths, like the guards who accepted the bribe. But we are called to stand in truth, even when it is difficult.
  • In our relationships, we are invited to share the Good News—not just in words, but in how we live.
  • In our spiritual growth, encountering Jesus should lead to action. The women didn’t stay at the tomb—they ran to proclaim Him.

The Resurrection is not just an event of the past; it is a living reality that calls us to transformation today.

LIVING THE GOSPEL TODAY

  • CHOOSE COURAGE OVER FEAR
When faced with uncertainty, trust in God’s presence and repeat Jesus’ words: “Fear not.”
  • PROCLAIM CHRIST THROUGH YOUR ACTIONS
Let your kindness, patience, and integrity reflect the risen Christ to others.
  • SEEK TRUTH AND REJECT COMPROMISE
Stand firm in your faith, even when it is inconvenient or misunderstood.

CONCLUDING THOUGHT

The Resurrection invites us into a life beyond fear—a life rooted in joy, truth, and mission. Like the women at the tomb, we are called not only to believe but to go forth and share the Good News. Christ is alive, and that changes everything.
