THE EMPTY TOMB AND THE AWAKENING OF FAITH

GOSPEL

John 20:1-9 (Douay-Rheims Bible)

And on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalen cometh early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre: and she saw the stone taken away from the sepulchre.

She ran, therefore, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and saith to them: They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him.

Peter therefore went out, and that other disciple, and they came to the sepulchre.

And they both ran together, and that other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre.

And when he stooped down, he saw the linen cloths lying; but yet he went not in.

Then cometh Simon Peter, following him, and went into the sepulchre, and saw the linen cloths lying,

And the napkin that had been about his head, not lying with the linen cloths, but apart, wrapped up into one place.

Then that other disciple also went in, who came first to the sepulchre: and he saw, and believed.

For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead.

REFLECTION

The Gospel today brings us to the quiet, mysterious dawn of the Resurrection. It begins in darkness—both literal and spiritual—but quickly moves toward light, discovery, and faith. Like Mary Magdalene and the disciples, we often begin our journey confused, uncertain, and searching. Yet, God meets us there and gently leads us toward belief.

UNDERSTANDING THE GOSPEL

This passage takes place early on the first day of the week—Sunday—the day that would forever become the Lord’s Day for Christians. Mary Magdalene, filled with love and grief, visits the tomb only to find it empty. Her first reaction is not joy but confusion. She assumes the body has been taken.

Peter and John (the beloved disciple) run to the tomb. Their running symbolizes urgency, longing, and love. John arrives first but waits; Peter enters immediately. Inside, they see the burial cloths—undisturbed, carefully arranged. This detail is deeply significant: it shows that Jesus’ body was not stolen. Rather, He rose in an orderly, divine act.

The beloved disciple “saw and believed.” This moment marks the beginning of Easter faith—not yet fully understood, but already alive in the heart.

The empty tomb is a powerful symbol:

It represents victory over death
It reveals God’s faithfulness to His promises
It invites us to believe even before we fully understand
WHAT THIS GOSPEL MEANS FOR US TODAY?

In our daily lives, we often encounter “empty tomb” moments—situations where God seems absent, where hope feels lost, or where answers are unclear. Like Mary Magdalene, we may jump to conclusions or feel overwhelmed.

But this Gospel reminds us:
God is at work even when we do not yet understand.

Faith does not always begin with certainty. Sometimes it begins with a small step—like running toward the tomb, like looking inside, like simply staying close to Christ.

In our struggles:

When prayers seem unanswered
When relationships feel broken
When life feels uncertain

We are invited to keep searching, keep believing, and keep trusting.

Like the beloved disciple, we are called to “see and believe”—not only with our eyes, but with our hearts.

LIVING THE GOSPEL TODAY

SEEK CHRIST DAILY
Spend a few quiet moments in prayer, especially in times of confusion or doubt.

TRUST GOD’S PLAN
Even when life doesn’t make sense, believe that God is working behind the scenes.

SHARE HOPE WITH OTHERS
Encourage someone who is struggling and remind them that resurrection follows suffering.

CONCLUDING THOUGHT

The empty tomb is not a sign of loss—it is a sign of victory. What seemed like the end was actually a new beginning. Today, Jesus invites us to move from doubt to faith, from darkness to light, and from fear to hope. Even when we do not fully understand, we are called to believe.

CLOSING PRAYER

Lord Jesus,
In moments of doubt and uncertainty, help me to trust in Your presence.
Open my eyes to see Your work in my life, and strengthen my faith to believe even when I do not understand.
Lead me from darkness into the light of Your Resurrection.
Amen.
